09/29/2009 - Dave Kirk, Academy Admissions Partner

On Sunday, September 13, 2009, Dave Kirk, SO-PA, Flotilla 61, 5NR, a USCG Academy Admissions Partner represented both the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary at Congressional Day held at Rutgers University. Congressional Day brings together representatives from all five Military Academies who make presentations, regarding their specific schools, to high school students in the state of New Jersey interested in making the military their career. The Congressional Day was sponsored by U.S. Senators Frank Lautenberg and Bob Menendez. Both Senators spoke regarding their role in support of the Academies.

The five military academies present were: the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Army Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy. Congressional Appointments are necessary for all but the Coast Guard Academy.

There were over 500 present at this event. After the presentations, each Academy had a specific area set aside to speak with interested students. Many of the young people visited several different academy sites. In the Coast Guard area, over 100 prospective students expressed interest in attending the Coast Guard Academy.

Following last year’s event, two of the students Dave worked with were accepted into the Academy and five high school juniors were accepted into the AIM program.

Dave qualified as an Academy Admissions Partner after passing a battery of tests administrated by the Coast Guard Academy. The Academy Admissions Partner program replaced the former Auxiliary Career Counselor program.

09/20/2009 - Division Vice Commander's Report

Dear Division Mates,

This report will start with information gained at the Fall 5NR conference, where I stood in as the Division 6 representative in Jim’s absence, followed by the SO and FC reports received for this month.

The Conference was held 9/11-9/13 in Philadelphia at the Holiday Inn at Fourth and Arch Street. The Conference was beautifully organized by our own Ira and Arlene Dolich (Flotilla 66). The location was a welcome departure (For Division 6 members) from the 2-3 hour drive to recent Conferences held in Lancaster or Gettysburg PA

Here are a number of relevant points (in no particular order) I took away from the Conference. I hope others of us who were there will share additional information at the meeting.

    - CDR Tredinnick’s and OTO Pinto’s 3-year tours at DIRAUX will end in June 2010. Starting with the Friday evening ‘Commanders Caucus’ and throughout the Conference it was evident that, without exception, the Division Commanders desired that the tours of this excellent team could be extended. The current DIRAUX office has worked tirelessly on behalf of the Auxiliary and is held in sincere respect and affection. Each Division will send letters up through the chain in the hope of having the Admiral consider a tour extension for them.

    - The DCDRs discussed the need for effective mentoring of new (and existing) members in Auxiliary programs. Some Divisions have designed well-organized approaches to this. The need for an inter-Division email ‘bang list’ for sharing such ideas was discussed. If I don’t see such communication started in the near future by others I will start it.

    - An important reminder to FCs—if you have not done the required annual Sexual Harassment Workshop—get it done.

    - The Spring Conference will be held March 19-21st. Location to be announced.

    - Division 7 was inspired by a recent Navigator article regarding the “Kids Don’t Float” program where life jackets are loaned to boaters at a ramp. DCDR Joyce McGowan implemented this program by successfully soliciting donated materials and labor from a Home Depot store to construct a small building in space donated by a local marina. This program not only helps to keep boaters safe but also has proved to be an effective recruiting tool for her Division. I suggest that we should replicate this effort. Anyone ready to step up to lead this?

    - District Chief of Staff (DCOS) Robby Robinson gave a presentation at the Operations Workshop describing “Operation Orange Smoke”, a series of exercises conducted with 5NR AUXAIR, SARDET Wilmington, SARDET Bowers Beach and USCG Air Station Atlantic City. The purpose of the exercises is to test and refine the ability of surface and air operations to effectively communicate in SAR response. All Divisions have been asked to participate in this valuable training. Division 6 will do so next year.

    - FSO-PEs should use the on-line Intent to Teach form from the 5NR site—not the National site

    - CDR Tredinnick gave a presentation at the Business Meeting (again) emphasizing importance of accurate data entry of our Mission Hours and Member Hour forms. She demonstrated how this data is used by the Coast Guard when competing for funds disbursed by Congress. The monetary value of our volunteer efforts was given in the context of (equilevent) full time employees (FTEs), in the (much) lower cost of fueling and provisioning our facilities, etc. I will procure a copy of her presentation and share it with you at a future Division meeting. We have all heard how important this data is—the Commanders presentation makes abundantly clear why this is so.

    - OTO Pinto will be sending “Swine Flu” kits to each Division. The kits contain gloves, facemasks and other protective materials. DCDRs will receive this kit in the next couple of weeks.

    - There was discussion of Public Education Classes. The New Jersey State Marine Police have arrested and prosecuted several ‘private providers’ for out and out fraud. On-going under-cover investigations seek to identify parties who attempt to issue NJ Boating Certificates without following NJ Statute. The Auxiliary has not been involved in any of these cases, and our integrity is assumed by the State. Let not a Member of Division 6 stain our reputation! If an Instructor has not been ‘vetted’ by the State Police (fingerprinted, photographed and holding the required experience and ID card) they MAY NOT stand before a class to give a lecture. FSO-PEs have received an email from SO-PE Barbara Gilbert regarding the new NJ forms to be used.

    - An update on the Auxiliary Manual should be completed in January 2010. More to follow.

    - CDR Tredinnick is starting new programs that include a new ‘Skype’-based communication system between Division Commanders and DIRAUX, an adoption of District 13’s ‘Citizen Action Network’, bringing CO-OP interns from Drexel University into Sector Delaware Bay and an ‘Auxiliarist of the Week’ program for 5NR. Division 6 is committed to helping CDR Tredinnick ‘grow’ these exciting and innovative initiatives.

Respectfully submitted,

Gary Swain, DVCDR 6
